The Journey to Bethlehem

Posted by on

"And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child."
Luke 2:4-5

Sometimes we do not grasp the magnitude of the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem because it is only described in two verses! But picture this, you're 9 months pregnant, and are told that you have to go on a 5 day journey to a place where you know no one.
It wasn't an easy journey either! It was through the Judaean desert and temperatures would have been near freezing at night. I think of Joseph's anxiety trying to get his betrothed safely to their destination. I think of Mary, a teenager who was a virgin, yet 9 months pregnant, trying to trust in God and her husband-to-be, Joseph. Then I think of God who allowed them to reach Bethlehem and find a place that although not comfortable, would provide them with the necessities needed to give birth to Jesus. A prophecy fulfilled.

As Christmas nears, don't forget what this holiday is truly about.
